Theater Education Internship

Gain valuable, hands-on arts administration experience at one of the region's leading theatres with a paid, full-time summer internship!

ACTIVITIES / BENEFITS:

  • Play a leading role in the planning, administration and implementation of Signature Theatre's Overtures Musical Theatre Institute, an intense two-week professional training program, and the prequel program, Stage One for students ages 14 to 17.
  • Assist Signature's Education Director with preparing schedules and educational materials for Signature in the Schools,Signature's award-winning arts education partnership with area public high schools.
  • Assist in developing Signature's 2010/2011 Community Outreach programming, including The Signature School curriculum and the Community Open House.
  • Receive a complimentary pair of tickets to Signature's mainstage shows.
  • Attend a special social event with other ExxonMobil student interns in July 2010 (date TBD).
  • Participate in special service projects with other ExxonMobil student interns (dates TBD)
  • FINAL PROJECT: Final evaluation reports for the Overtures and Stage One programs and research materials for Signature in the Schools.

FELLOWSHIP CANDIDATES MUST:

  • Have completed at least one year of undergraduate work with a "B" average or better and must be returning as a full time undergraduate student in fall 2010.
  • Fulfill an eight-week, full-time internship (35 hours per week) from May 24 to July 21, 2010
  • Attend three mandatory meetings hosted by Volunteer Fairfax and ExxonMobil in June 2010 (exact dates TBD).

HIGHLY COMPETITIVE FELLOWSHIP CANDIDATES WILL HAVE:

  • Knowledge of or experience in musical theater or the performing arts
  • Excellent communication and writing skills and a proficiency in Microsoft Office, or other word processing software, and Microsoft Excel
  • The ability to multi-task, work a flexible schedule, solve problems creatively and "self-start" projects with a positive attitude.

COMPENSATION: A $2,750 stipend will be paid over the eight-week internship.

  • Two letters of recommendation from academic references
  • Brief written answers to the following questions (3 page limit): 1) explain your specific interest in theater or the performing arts; 2) summarize your work experience to date and illustrate what strengths you would bring to this internship; 3) what do you expect to gain from this internship? 4) What about the program specifically interests you?
