EVE OF DESTRUCTION CAST EXPLORES THEIR CREATIVE IMAGINATION

Rehearsals for Eve of Destruction, Joe Calarco’s original one-act play that takes place in Iraq, began on December 11, 2006.  Students started the rehearsal process by exploring their own creativity with Actress Nancy Robinette and playwright Paulette Laufer.

Robinette and Laufer became intrigued with the creative relationship between actors and writers when they first worked together on the premiere of Paulette’s play, Pool Fever.  Since then, they have developed a creativity workshop with exercises designed to spark the imagination.  One of the exercises they practiced with the cast of Eve of Destruction called for each student to select a photograph of an Iraqi and create a character by exploring the statement “Once I was; now I am.”  This workshop opened up a means for actors to explore words, images, and the art of story telling, and provided a great foundation for the students to begin work on the show they are helping to create.

Inside The MAX, the company gets a look at the space where they will be performing Joe Calarco’s original script Eve of Destruction.

After the tour, the cast met in the fourth floor conference room.  Wakefield High School senior Maggie Colella (left) is returning for her fourth year as Stage Manager.  Seated beside her is freshman Irene Casey, a first-time Signature in the Schools participant.

Each year the cast receives resource materials relevant to the historic events and social conditions in the play to help familiarize themselves with the world their characters inhabit.  Education Director Marcia Gardner asks the students to share some of their insights and questions about Islam and the Qur’an.
