GOODBYE TO THE GARAGE: A GRAND NIGHT FOR SINGING
An excerpt from Eric Schaeffer’s opening remarks at The Last Garage Hurrah Benefit Concert

On my way to work at WETA one day, some 13 years ago, I drove by this building that had no windows, no roof, no heating/AC, and I thought, “This could be a theater.” And six months later, on October 19, 1993, the garage opened with Company.

From this date on, the garage would serve as home for a total of 65 productions and a total of 2,922 performances. It would become an Italian villa, a roller skating rink, a circus tent, a grand hotel lobby, a mid-west plain, and the country of Japan. The memories are very fond and endless.

I think of all that we accomplished with so little. Signature created not just shows, but entire environments in this space. I could think of no better send-off to the garage than featuring highlights from all the musicals that have been sung between these block walls. There is so much rich history here. So much to remember.

Goodbye, garage. We’ll miss you.
