Overtures is dedicated to the nurturing and training of emerging musical theater performers. Designed for college students and recent graduates, Overtures is a unique experience for a select number of young artists. This two-week intensive, professional training program provides rigorous and comprehensive instruction in vocal and performance technique, dance, acting and audition skills.
WHAT IT IS
Overtures is under the direction of Matthew Gardiner, Signature’s Associate Artistic Director, and Karma Camp, award-winning professional choreographer and Signature Theatre Artistic Associate. The faculty has also included Signature Theatre’s Artistic Director, Eric Schaeffer; professional actress and vocal instructor, Tracy Lynn Olivera; professional music director, Darius Smith; Helen Hayes award-winning actor, Nova Y. Payton; and Helen Hayes award-winning actor and director, Mitchell Hébert.
Overtures will take place over two weeks: June 15– 21 and June 22 – 27, 2015. Overtures meets six days per week from 10AM to 9PM with the final showcase performed on June 27 at 11AM. The curriculum includes daily classes in dance, acting and vocal performance, master classes with experienced professionals, and rehearsals for the end-of-session showcase presented on Saturday, June 27, in Signature’s MAX Theatre. The experience culminates with an opportunity for students to audition for local professional casting directors and to receive personal feedback on their audition.
Master Classes are taught by distinguished theater professionals and associated Signature artists.

HOW TO APPLY

AUDITION IN PERSON
March 14, 2015 at Signature Theatre from 10AM to 1PM. Bring a headshot and resume detailing your performance experience. Be prepared to sing 32 bars of a musical theater song of your choice and to perform a one-minute monologue of your choice (no classical monologues, please.) Bring your audition book; you may be asked to sing more. There will be a dance audition; bring appropriate clothing/shoes. SEND AUDITION MATERIALS ELECTRONICALLY
Prepare a DVD or YouTube video that includes 32 bars total of two contrasting songs (performed with an accompanist) AND a dance or movement routine that demonstrates your ability to move with music. Submit a letter of intent describing your interest in attending Overtures. Include a headshot and resume.

TUITION & HOUSING
Tuition for 2015 Overtures Musical Theatre Institute will be $1,750. Housing availability is very limited and available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Additional costs for housing can be expected.
Fellowships are available for applicants with special circumstances. A limited number of full and partial tuition fellowships are made possible by individual donors and organizations such as the Weissberg Foundation. Fellowship funds can also be awarded for travel, housing and per diem expenses. Applications for Fellowship assistance can be submitted beginning March 2, 2015. All fellowship applications must be received by the March 20, 2015 deadline. Fellowship awards will be made by April 13, 2015.
